Life with football

Football has a major cultural influence all over Europe. And for good reasons, everybody from young to old enjoys the game. Not only to play, but also to watch. I tried to play, but wasn’t the biggest talent. So for me, I have to do with watching the game. It so happens to be that ADO is the club I am a fan of. Me and my dad went to my first game when I was 5 and have been hooked ever since. I hope this blog will convince you to go to a game when visiting The Hague.

The Club

Formed in 1905 ADO Den Haag has had moderate success over the years. Most noticeable achievements are winning the “beker” in 67/68 and winning the second division undefeated in 1986. In recent years ADO has not achieved much success, one of the only highlights is winning the playoffs in 2011 which meant they where qualifying for the Europa League.


Ado Den Haag plays in green and yellow, just like the cities flag. Also just like the cities emblem, Storky is the mascot of the club. Storky will make sure you have something to cheer for before the game starts. 

The Stadium

Since 2007 ADO Den Haag play their home games at the Cars Jeans Stadion, a bit outside the city. Before 2007 they played in the Zuiderpark stadium. The new stadium is easy to reach with the car, but for backpackers or travelers in general public transport is the best option. With starting point Hostel The Golden Stork, you can either walk or take tram 9 towards the “tramtunnel” in the city center and from there take tram 3 or 4. After you get off at forepark you will see the stadium and there is a 15 minute walk left.


During the game the atmosphere is always great. Two sides of the stadium are filled with loud singing fans, these enthusiastic fans will stand during the whole game. If you are looking to sit during the game and rather not sing along with songs your aren’t familiar with, you can buy tickets for section P, H or the family area.


In 2014 the world cup field hockey was organized in The Hague and the games were played at the Cars Jeans Stadion. Hockey is mostly played on artificial grass so the natural grass was replaced to great disappointment of most ADO fans. This year however ADO Den Haag will play on natural grass again.

Tickets

ADO plays 17 home games every year and tickets are widely available. You can get your tickets at the locket near the stadium. You could probably go on game day, unfortunately the stadium is not sold out often. But if you want to be sure, you can buy your tickets here. Tickets go for around 20 euros depending where you are seated. You need to print out your ticket, if your staying at The Golden Stork, this is no problem since you can always ask to use the printer.

Conclusion

ADO Den Haag is a club with a rich history and great fans. Tickets are very affordable and you will definitely have a great experience. Next season ADO will start with a new coach, a new field and of course a few new players. A new season brings new hope and a reason to go to the game. So I hope to catch you there.

The Hague is one of the greenest cities in The Netherlands. So much so that in 2017 The Hague was awarded the “Groenste stad”. The color green is so embedded in The Hague that you can find it in our flag and local football pride ADO Den Haag also plays in green. So if you visit The Hague you have to visit some of the parks and I will tell you about my favorites.

Zuiderpark

Het Zuiderpark is the biggest park of The Hague. The park is absolutely loaded with activities. Next to of course the basic park experiences, there is a pool, open air theater and you can rent a rowing boat. Until 2007 stadium Zuiderpark was the main attraction. After the demolition in 2007 the stadium was replaced by the sportcampus. Nowadays dozens of local sporting clubs call the Zuiderpark their home.


During the year many events are organized in the Zuiderpark. Most noteworthy is Parkpop. Every year the last Sunday of June this free music festival attracts over 200.000 people to the Zuiderpark. Located just east of De Haagse Markt, the Zuiderpark is easy to reach via tram 9 and tram 16 or bus 25 and 26. 

Westbroekpark

Westbroekpark is the main park of Scheveningen. Split up in 2 parts, the Rosarium and the main park. Inside the main park you will find a need little playground and loads of space to sit around and barbecue. If you visit Westbroekpark during a summer evening you will find that many people will setup their barbecue and enjoy the weather. Inside the main area there is also a sort of hidden entrance towards the rowing boats. The rowing boats are an absolute joy since there is loads of space for you to discover.


In the Rosarium you will find around 25000 roses between June and October. It’s an absolute joyous sight and most definitely worth your time. After enjoying the Rosarium, there will be an ice cream shop waiting for you near the exit.


Westbroekpark is a bit harder to reach with public transport. Only tram 9 comes close, you will have to get off at Madurodam. I suggest you visit Westbroekpark after you visit Madurodam, which is also a must see attraction in The Hague 

Japanese Garden, clingendael

To visit the Japanse Tuin you will probably have to plan in advance, because the garden is only open 8 weeks every year. But once you’re there, it’s absolutely magical. The garden is the only Japanese garden in The Netherlands. The garden is not placed somewhere randomly in the city. Surrounded by estate Clingendael, there is an absolute calm surrounding the garden.


Clingendael is easy to reach via bus 20 or bus 23. To get to the garden you will have to walk a few minutes.

Dunes

North-east of Scheveningen are the dunes. This large scale natural landscape is a great joy to bike around. So don’t go here thinking you will make a quick hike, you are going to need a bike. After you enter the park at the Harstenhoekweg, you will soon see the big water tower. After this, there is nothing but nature and biking people until you reach Meijendel. In Meijendel you can get your well-deserved pancakes and hike around a little bit. Before you get to Meijendel you will have to face a fierce hill where many will suffer a little bit, but the view will most definitely be worth it. You will see the skyline of The Hague, most of the natural landscape and of course the North Sea.

cONCLUSION

The Hague offers a great variety in parks and there are many more than just the few listed in this blog. No matter where you go in The Hague you will come across some green space. So if you visit The Hague during the summer please enjoy one of the great parks.

Don’t know where to go for lunch in The Hague? Don’t worry! I made a top 5 ‘best places to go for lunch in Den Haag’ for you. As a local, I also struggled where I wanted to go for lunch every time. But now that I lunched my way around in The Hague, I do have my favorite spots. So if you have no clue where to grab a lunch in The Hague: don’t worry: I’ll help you choose! 

1. Warung Mini

Warung Mini is definitely one of my favorite places to grab a lunch in Den Haag. It’s just around the corner of the city center.  Warung Mini is a Surinam place, where you can eat delicious plates or soups for lunch and dinner. Also, if you like spicy food: Warung Mini is the place to go!

                                                                                                                                

When I’m lunching here, I always take the ‘saoto soep’. This is a soup with baked chicken, Eastern garlic, egg, onions and bean sprouts. To be honest, this meal is not explainable: you have to try it before you know what saoto soep really is. I highly recommend this place! 

2. Dungelmann 

If you are craving for meat or grease, Dungelmann is the place to go! The best thing to get here, in my opinion, is a ‘broodje bal gehakt’, which literally is bread (een bolletje) with a meatball (and sauce of course). Their meatballs are the number 1 in The Hague, in my opinion.

 What’s also really cool, is that Dungelmann exist for 155 years now. All the locals come here to eat their delicious sandwiches, or they buy some meat for their dinner plans.

Anyway, Dungelmann is definitely a place where you have to grab food in The Hague. Even if it’s just to see a real ‘local place’!

 

3. Pim coffee

At Pim coffee you can literally get anything you are craving for at lunch. You can get the best sandwiches, tosti’s, soups and salads here. They also sell pies en cakes, which makes me very happy!
If you are looking for something healthy: Pim coffee also has smoothies and fresh juices, which makes this the place to go for a healthy lunch in The Hague!

                                


Pim coffee is also known for its tea’s. They have so much flavors, you’ll need half an hour to choose between them!

                                

If you’re living the vegan life, Pim coffee is also the best place you can go to in Den Haag. Most of their products are vegan! If you want to know more about their menu or products, you can visit their website by clicking here.

4. Mugs & Mermaids

If you are looking for something different, Mugs & Mermaids is the place to go!
Mugs & Mermaids is the spot for colorful, trendy and also good quality food and drinks. They’ll show you food can look beautiful, taste amazing and can also be justified!

        

You’ll literally feel like a mermaid when you’re going for lunch here. With their blue pancakes and pink smoothies, Mugs & Mermaids is not only a great lunch spot in The Hague, but also a real experience!

5. Irodeon Den Haag

Irodeon Den Haag is a great Greek restaurant in the middle of the city centre of The Hague. You can eat here for dinner, but you can also get great lunches here!

                                

If you like Greek food, Irodeon is definitely the place you should go. I always go for the ‘pita gyros’ or ‘pita suflaki’. In my opinion, these two are the best to go for when you’re hungry!

This also is the place to go when you’re craving for more calories, because after you ate, you won’t have to eat for another 6 hours!


You can get your delicious, calorie bomb lunch here for only 6 to 7 euros! Oh, and there is also good news for the vegetarians among us: they also have vegetarian options! If you want to see their menu, just click on the link!


Conclusion

The Hague, or Den Haag, has so much choice when it comes to lunch spots. Blue pancakes from Mugs & Mermaids, Surinam soup from Warung Mini, Greek food from Irodeon, there is something for everyone in this city!

You may be wondering where to go see live tunes in The Hague. There are plenty of pubs and bars but not all of them share a passion for live music. Here is our list of good spots to go see live music in The Hague. !

City center

Murphy's Law

This place is known for its live jazz performances and its steady supply of beers on tap. There are local dutch beers on the tap as well as from all over Europe. The selection of beers on tap changes regularly, so even the regular clients can keep tasting different beers. Besides that, it is known for its live jazz nights which take place several days a week. So even if you are not visiting The Hague during the weekend you can still catch some tunes in this cozy Irish pub. 

De Paap

Existing for already 20 years, De Paap has been the hosting club to all kinds of artists throughout the years. It is one of the few bars in the city center that stays open until the early mornings. This makes it a popular choice for people who want to continue partying even after many other bars and clubs shut their doors. Every Friday and Saturday night there are live performances and sometimes on weekdays as well. The vibe is small and cozy with numerous locals as well as tourists passing through.

The golden stork

Our own bar of course! With a beautiful view at the canal of Den Haag. Every Satuday we are looking for local talent to perform in our small and cozy coffee bar that turns into a bar with local craft beer after 8! Keep an eye on our events to see which artist is performing. 


After the set of the artists a lot of times the real party starts and local artists have jam sessions with each other.

De Gekke Geit

This is a small bar that belongs with Hostel The Hague. Every friday night it is home to karaoke night while other nights of the week are often treated with live music. While De Gekke Geit is known for its live jazz music, the artists and performers that grace the stage here are not only limited to jazz. All genres and styles of music are welcome so if you are planning to attend a show it is best to check the schedule and see what will be playing.

Outside the city center

Grand cafe victoria

Nestled just outside the city center is this gem of a cafe restaurant, the atmosphere is laid-back no matter what time you visit. This is highly recommended if you wish to enjoy great dishes to the soundtrack of smooth jazz.The restaurant serves snack platters meant for sharing as well as full dinner plates. All the ingredients they use are from the local region. Every Thursday they have live jazz performances while on other nights they simply play jazz music through the sound system.

Bartine is where all the locals go for their coffee and breakfast. They have te best coffee, and if you like something sweet for breakfast, you should definitely try their tonsils croissants! I can assure you, this croissants will be the best  croissant you’ll ever eat in your life!

                                                                                                                                                                                                      The people that work here are also really nice, and they did a really good job arranging everything around the Corona Virus. What makes this place also really nice, is the fact that it is located on one of the best places of The Hague. Herengracht is a street that’s really Dutch. So when you picked up your coffee to go, just sit somewhere in the street. I promise you’ll  like it.

Lola bikes & Coffee

Lola Bikes & Coffee is a different type of place. The emphasis of this place is not only their amazing coffee, but also bikes! If you’re looking for something different, or if you are a bike fanate, Lola is definitely the place to go!


Lola Bikes & Coffee is located on the royal and beautiful street Noordeinde. Hometown

Coffee, slow-coffee, fresh smoothies & juices, wine, artisanal treats, sandwiches and bites. Hometown has everything to help you to start your morning perfectly.

 

Hometown is located in the middle of the city centre, near Het Binnenhof and The Hofvijver.  What I find really cool about this place, is their interior. It’s a little industrial, and personal at the same time. This place really has good vibes and great coffee!

Bookstor

Bookstor in The Hague also has great coffee, and is the something different you may be looking for. Bookstor is not only one of the best places to grab your coffee to go, but they are also one of the best-known bookstores in The Hague (yes, it’s in the name)!


They are located on the royal street Noordeinde, and they have such a nice vibe going on. It’s all about good coffee and good books!

The Hague is the city at the beach. The old fishermanstown Scheveningen grew last decade as one of the most popular beach hotspots (over more than 3,5 million visitors a year!) in north Europe. We will show you the great things about Scheveningen Beach. You will learn about the boulevard, the pier and the many great beach clubs that are open during summer time.

Boulevard Scheveningen

Boulevard Scheveningen has provided thousands of people with joy since the beginning of the 20th century. Of course a lot has changed over the passed 120 years, only the Kurhaus has been present in some way. Nowadays you are welcomed by “The Palace”, a shopping center for all your shopping needs. After you leave The Palace and you are looking for something to eat you will need to make choice between McDonalds or a local delicacy; herring. Simonis is the first place you will see and is a well known name in The Hague and surrounding areas for well over a decade.

Scheveningen Pier

While enjoying the herring you will for sure see the eyecatcher of Scheveningen; the pier. After being bought by KonderWessels in 2014 the place completely turned around. Inside the main hall are tons of fun little activities and small food joints. For the ones looking for adventure there is the possibility to bungy jump of the 60 meter high tower. For the ones not looking to voluntarily jump towards the depths of the ocean, there is also a great Ferris wheel where you will have the best view of The Hague

Beach clubs

After either having had a great adrenaline rush, or you just saw The Hague from a completely new perspective, there is nothing better then to sit down and enjoy the weather at one of the great beach clubs. Every year around march all the beach clubs start building up their place for the season and a what feels like a small village is created at the beach. There is an absolute great atmosphere and we highly recommend you got to Beachclub Indigo because of relax atmosphere.

Conclusion

If you are visiting The Hague you have to make a visit to Scheveningen Beach as well. No matter how old you are or what you like to do, everyone will something to do. Will it be one of the Beach clubs? Or go to the Ferris Wheel? That is for you to discover

5. Chinatown

Originally, the neighborhood of Chinatown was known as the Jewish Neighborhood in The Hague.During Worldwar II this area of Den Haag became vacant. In the 1970’s, this neighborhood attracted many Chinese. 
They have literally and figuratively revived the neighborhood! Today’s Chinatown has a-ma-zing little Chinese restaurants and shops. This part of Den Haag is worth visiting for sure! As locals, we often grab some food and snacks here (and we LOVE it)!

4. Het Binnenhof

If you are thinking about Dutch politics, you have to visit Het Binnenhof. Het Binnenhof is located next to Mauritshuis Den Haag, also at the Hofvijver. Het Binnenhof has been the location of the Dutch parlement and politics for centuries. In fact, the city of Den Haag originated around Het Binnenhof! How cool is that?!


At and around Het Binnenhof you can see the fountain, which is part of the Hofvijver. You can also see ‘het Torentje’, which is a part of Het Binnenhof. As we know it today, this is the working space of our minister-president. At het Binnenhof, you can also see the former knight’s hall, which was build in the 13th century. You can just walk in Het Binnenhof, since it’s located in the middle of the city centre

of The Hague. So if you are on a budget trip: you can visit Het Binnenhof for free!

3. Mauritshuis Den Haag

Mauritshuis Den Haag is located near the city center of The Hague, at the Hofvijver. In this museum

you can check out a huge number of paintings from the Golden Age. Mauritshuis Den Haag also possesses several masterpieces coming from the 18th century.


The building of Mauritshuis is build in 1640, and has great architecture! For a normal ticket you pay €15,50 (certainly manageable!), but again, if you are under 18, you can visit this museum for free! The Hague rocks right?

2. Fotomuseum Den Haag

Fotomuseum Den Haag is located next to, and a part of, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. In this museum you can see several photography collections, from different artists. And this makes us really happy: you can buy a ticket to see the Fotomuseum and Gemeentemuseum in one. This will cost you €23,-.


If you want to visit Fotomuseum Den Haag separately a normal ticket will cost you €10,-. But like Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, they have group deals, special prices for students and again, if you’re under 18, you can visit the museum for free!

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, also known as Kunstmuseum Den Haag, is one of the most important museums in The Hague. Inside the museum, there are several collections including art,
music and fashion.

The museum contains a large collection of artwork, including work from Degas, Monet, Picasso and Mondriaan.


A normal ticket for Gemeentemuseum Den Haag will cost you €16,-. But they have group deals, special prices for students and if you’re under 18 you can visit the museum for free! That is what we want to hear!

Craft beer Den Haag

Craft beer is here now, it is not a hype or a trend anymore. The people has spoken and it is here to stay. We as The Golden Stork are big craft Dutch and Belgian beer fans, loves to talk and are so lucky we have actually great local breweries in The Hague. Through this list we will introduce you to as many of them as we can.  And let you know what to taste and where you can actually visit them.

Number 5- Brouwerij   het Kwartje

The name literally translates to ''Quarter Brewery'. The brewery is open for guests to see but an appointment must be made first. The brewery was opened by a group of friends in 2016 after reaching their financial goal via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. 



The old friends have worked together in bars and breweries in the past and finally decided to start their own brand of beer and brewery. The brewery's main selection consists of 6 different beers. One special flavor they provide is the ''Speculaas' beer which is a strong stout beer with the light taste of herbs and spices, based on the famous Dutch crackers of the same name.  More information can be found on their website

Number 4 - Brouwerij Scheveningen

This brewery was started in the port of Scheveningen beach in 1996 and since then they have released 9 different beers as their main products. Like many other breweries, different seasons will also warrant special beers only sold during specific seasons. The brewery is open to the public and there are tours held in the brewery. In 2015 the brewery was moved to a larger location outside of the port but still very close to the sea.

Number 3 - Haagche Broeder

Best known for its branding as a 'monastic beer'. In this brewery all the beer is brewed by monks from the monastery of the brothers of Saint John. There are 4 different beers to choose from and those include dark, blond, amber and special. This monastery is in the middle of the city center of The Hague and can be visited! How? Check out their website.

Number 2-Eiber 

A brewery from The Hague that is still growing. They don't have their own bar or location for beer tastings but do allow groups to book Eiber events in the location of their choice.

All year round they sell bottles of their four main types of beer which include blond, dark, IPA and wheat. Eiber wants to expand and work together with local businesses to provide better experiences for fans of their beer. But unlike other places They are working together with organizations such as The Hague Boat Tours, a boat tour that allows you to also drink Eiber while getting a tour of the city from the canals. This is probably the most common and established beer brand from The Hague. The brand uses their own bar to host several beer drinking events each week. Sometimes that can involve beer tastings from different countries, craft beer nights, happy hours and special beer-themed nights such as a night dedicated to and celebrating IPAs for example. 


This is the bar for local beer lovers in The Hague. They have over 20 types of beer on tap and their selection regularly changes. A restaurant serving great snacks and dinners to accompany the cold beers. That is all to be found in the Kompaan bar. Keep in mind that Kompaan has its own brewery as well where they brew all their own beers. In total they are producing 12 different types of bottled beers year round and also have 6 seasonal beers which are only produced in specific seasons. The bottled beers from the brewery can be bought from many bars in The Hague but the best place to drink these beers would be straight from the tap in their own bar.
