Pros include professional atmosphere, great breakfast service, good central location with bike storage facilities and family rooms option for those travelling as a group. However one downside is that it lacks some informal experience which can be found outside these types of chains; but this does not mean you're getting robbed on your money here- stay at either type will offer accommodation worthy enough to visit Holland's capital city while paying less than expected!

2nd place - KingKool The Hague City Hostel

The second place goes to the KingKool hostel Den Haag. With free wifi, a garden, barbecue facilities and a terrace, as well as private rooms option available for travelers who need their privacy during their stay in this central located hostel - it seems like there's something here that everyone can enjoy! But be wary of some of its accommodations: not all rooms have windows or natural light coming through them so if you're planning on checking out one room make sure to pay attention to how many windows are included with your reservation beforehand.

1st place - The Golden Stork Hostel

The Golden Stork is our winner on the affordable facilities categorie. This Hostel offer great value for your money being centrally located, from there you are walking distance to the main train stations of the city, museums and historical buildings. The Golden Stork was our winner because besides being the most affordable hostel from the city, they offer also a very nice terrace with a vegetarian food menu, which I find a nice plus. Other than this, we like that The Golden Stork is a family business - the owners are 2 brothers from The Hague, that decided to open a small local hospitality business - It gives a cool family atmosphere to the hostel.


One thing that you should be aware is that the rooms don’t have windows - we don’t find it such a problem, since there is a ventilation system, AC and when travelling, we just go to the room to sleep anyway so we don’t need a view so much. But if that’s a problem for you, maybe that’s not your best choice.

In our opinion The Golden Stork offers the bet value for your money in The Hague, and that, along with those other nice details from the place, got the first place in our ranking!

We are getting a lot of questions about what a Hostel actually is and what it makes that a Hostel is different from, for example, a hotel. And since we are a Hostel as well, we wanted to explain a bit more about ‘the Hostel life’. So why not put it in a blogpost for you guys, right?

What is a hostel?

According to Wikipedia, a hostel is ‘a youth Hostel and a cheap overnight accommodation, affiliated with Hostelling International or another cheap overnight accommodation’. 

How we experience the life in a Hostel, different from the explanation Wikipedia gives. We get all different kinds of people, from young to elder and coming from all around the globe. !

6 tips for when you are going to stay in a hostel for the first time:

1.  Pack your own towel from home: in most hostels there are no towels included.


2.  Always check if there is a free breakfast at the hostel! And if it’s free or cheap: don’t expect too much. Oh, and one more thing: don’t get up too late; there’s a change everything is gone by the time you get up!


3.  Do you have a ‘moment of loneliness’? Go and chill in the common area for a bit! The chances are great that you will meat new, awesome people there!


4.  Ask the receptionist(s) if they have some tips about the city you’re in. Usually they have a free city map (yeay!) and most of the time the people who work in the Hostel also did some awesome stuff in the city and/or know the city like the back of their hand!


5.  Bring a little lock when packing your bags (TSA is the best option)! This can be very useful if there are lockers in the room you’re gonna sleep in!


6.  Check if the hostel has a kitchen, fridge, microwave, etc. If you really want to cook, it’s nice to know beforehand if the hostel you want to sleep in has a kitchen!

This really depends on how big the Hostel is you want to go. Most Hostels have 4,6,8,10,12 and 16-bed dorms. Of course the prices will also be different per room (the more people in the room, the cheaper your stay). 


Maybe it sounds heavy to stay in a room with that many people, and don’t get us wrong: it can be. But it can also be a lot of fun! You meet a lot of new people and probably will have many different conversations!

How do you find good hostels to sleep in?

You can do a search on google about the hostels that are in the city you want to go, and after that, look for some reviews to make sure you’re choosing the hostel where you’ll feel at home! You can also check booking.com, hostelworld.com and expedia.com.

                                

Also make sure you check the reviews, the website of the hostel and maybe even the Social Media accounts (if they have one) before you book. In that way, you’ll get a good first impression!

Ways how to Hack the Quarantine as a traveler

Now that we temporarily can’t travel because of the Corona Virus, things can get a little tough without having something to look forward to. For example, I had a two week trip planned to Curacao in May. I was looking forward to this for half a year, so I was really disappointed when I could’t go.


The question is now: how do we survive without traveling? How do we keep ourselves positive? And how can we still discover things when we’re not allowed to go anywhere?


In this post I wrote down a few tips for you that really worked out for me! 

Tip 1: Exploring in your own city

Exploring my own city, The Hague, really helped me out. I know what you’re thinking: ‘But I live here, I’ve already seen everything!’. Yeah, this was my first thought too.

But when I took my bike or went for a walk, I saw something different every time. A forest I didn’t even knew it existed or a beautiful small beach, just 15 minutes away with the bike from Scheveningen.

If you normally travel a lot, what you’re missing the most are discoveries. It’s all about the incentives you get from seeing something new. So if you can do this in your own city, this will help you out a lot! 

Tip 2: Realize what you have at home

If traveling is literally your life, of course you’re going to have some trouble when all of a sudden you can not travel anymore. But this is also a good time to realize what you do have at home. Maybe you start appreciating your parents more, or you realize that you’re really happy with the city that you live in.


To keep thinking positive about this stuff really helps when negativity predominates your daily routine. So: try to see the good in all things and keep positivity in your life! 

Tip 3: Thinking about things that aren’t working out for you

Okay, if you’re not happy with your life, this is THE time to start thinking about what you do want. Are you happy with your work? Are you happy in your love life? Not to make you sad of course, but when you’re not happy with something in your life, don’t postpone something you literally have all the time for now!

Tip 4: Write about your feelings/frustrations

Writing is very important to me personally, so writing about how and what I feel really helps me out. If you’re feeling frustrated or sad about not being able to travel right now, write down your emotions. It helps giving you perspective and a heaviness will literally fall of your shoulders, when you put your thoughts and emotions on paper!

Tip 5: Make plans for the future

Now is the time to write down where you want to go in your life. What countries do you still want to visit? How much does it cost you to travel to this countries? And maybe you’re also thinking about moving to another country.

Making a plan about this stuff really helps me out a lot, because when you do this, you’ll have something to look forward to! 

Conclusion

There is so much to do in this time. The days when you didn’t have enough time are now (temporarily) passed. So get yourself out of bed and try to make the best of it!

5. Chinatown

Originally, the neighborhood of Chinatown was known as the Jewish Neighborhood in The Hague.During Worldwar II this area of Den Haag became vacant. In the 1970’s, this neighborhood attracted many Chinese. 
They have literally and figuratively revived the neighborhood! Today’s Chinatown has a-ma-zing little Chinese restaurants and shops. This part of Den Haag is worth visiting for sure! As locals, we often grab some food and snacks here (and we LOVE it)!

4. Het Binnenhof

If you are thinking about Dutch politics, you have to visit Het Binnenhof. Het Binnenhof is located next to Mauritshuis Den Haag, also at the Hofvijver. Het Binnenhof has been the location of the Dutch parlement and politics for centuries. In fact, the city of Den Haag originated around Het Binnenhof! How cool is that?!


At and around Het Binnenhof you can see the fountain, which is part of the Hofvijver. You can also see ‘het Torentje’, which is a part of Het Binnenhof. As we know it today, this is the working space of our minister-president. At het Binnenhof, you can also see the former knight’s hall, which was build in the 13th century. You can just walk in Het Binnenhof, since it’s located in the middle of the city centre

of The Hague. So if you are on a budget trip: you can visit Het Binnenhof for free!

3. Mauritshuis Den Haag

Mauritshuis Den Haag is located near the city center of The Hague, at the Hofvijver. In this museum

you can check out a huge number of paintings from the Golden Age. Mauritshuis Den Haag also possesses several masterpieces coming from the 18th century.


The building of Mauritshuis is build in 1640, and has great architecture! For a normal ticket you pay €15,50 (certainly manageable!), but again, if you are under 18, you can visit this museum for free! The Hague rocks right?

2. Fotomuseum Den Haag

Fotomuseum Den Haag is located next to, and a part of, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. In this museum you can see several photography collections, from different artists. And this makes us really happy: you can buy a ticket to see the Fotomuseum and Gemeentemuseum in one. This will cost you €23,-.


If you want to visit Fotomuseum Den Haag separately a normal ticket will cost you €10,-. But like Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, they have group deals, special prices for students and again, if you’re under 18, you can visit the museum for free!

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, also known as Kunstmuseum Den Haag, is one of the most important museums in The Hague. Inside the museum, there are several collections including art,
music and fashion.

The museum contains a large collection of artwork, including work from Degas, Monet, Picasso and Mondriaan.


A normal ticket for Gemeentemuseum Den Haag will cost you €16,-. But they have group deals, special prices for students and if you’re under 18 you can visit the museum for free! That is what we want to hear!
